Winter Weather Updates

Winter Weather Outlook

The City of Boerne is monitoring the weather after the arrival of an Arctic cold front that moved into the area overnight Friday, Jan. 23 into Saturday, Jan. 24.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning and an Ice Storm Warning until noon Sunday, Jan. 25. with forecasts calling for moderate and potentially significant accumulations of ice and sleet. Additionally, an Extreme Cold Warning is in effect until noon Monday, Jan. 26.

Most freezing precipitation is expected between Saturday evening and Sunday morning. Dangerous icing on roads will likely persist through the weekend due to sustained freezing temperatures. Please avoid unnecessary travel and exercise extreme caution if you must venture out.

High temperatures will drop into the 30s with low temperatures dipping into the 10s. Windchill temperatures are likely to fall even lower. There is high likelihood Boerne will remain near or below freezing for 48 straight hours. This system also brings higher precipitation chances and a wintry mix.

UPDATES: Monday, Jan. 26

5 p.m. Update

City offices will be on a two-hour delay on Tuesday, January 27 with offices opening at 10 a.m.

UPDATES: Sunday, Jan. 25

5 p.m. Update

WM has notified the City that there will be no trash or recycling services on Monday, Jan. 26. Normal operations will begin on Tuesday, January 27, with each day being pushed one day.

That means that Monday residential will be serviced on Tuesday, Tuesday will be serviced Wednesday and so on throughout the week, with all residential services being scheduled to be fully completed by Saturday, January 31.

12:45 p.m. Update

City offices will be closed on Monday, January 26, 2026 for all non-essential personnel. Critical services will remain fully operational. The warming center at the library will reopen again on Monday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Falling Ice: As the sun starts to shine, it is possible larger chunks of ice will slide off roofs onto porches and patios. Please use caution if you head outside.

Utilities: There are no issues to report at this time. We have not received any reports of electric outages or impacts to water, wastewater, or natural gas systems. Our crews continue to closely monitor all systems as conditions persist.

Streets & Travel: Many roads remained ice-covered Sunday morning. While sunshine is helping improve some driving conditions, temperatures are expected to stay below freezing. Icing will likely continue overnight into Monday. Thank you to everyone who is continuing to stay home when possible – it is helping reduce crashes and calls for service, allowing public safety teams to focus where they’re needed most.

11 a.m. Update

Icy weather impacted Boerne Saturday night into Sunday morning. By sunrise the precipitation moved out. Since the majority of the icy weather fell in the form of sleet, impacts to utilities were reduced. Boerne Utilities crews were out on Sunday morning, and reported no issues with natural gas, water or electric services across the Boerne Utilities service territory.

Temperatures on Sunday are not expected to get above freezing, which means much of the ice that feel will not be able to melt. We continue to encourage residents to stay home and off the roads.

UPDATES: Saturday, Jan. 24

9 p.m. Update

The City’s de-icing trucks are traversing the City as road conditions continue to deteriorate. Heavier bouts of freezing rain and sleet continue to move over Boerne. Please continue to remain home and off the streets as traveling conditions are not expected to improve in the immediate future.

7:30 p.m. Update

Light freezing mist and drizzle continues to fall in Boerne. The City of Boerne Streets Department went back out on Saturday afternoon and pre-treated area roads that are prone to icing up during winter weather. More moderate freezing rain and sleet is forecast Saturday night into Sunday morning. Please continue to stay home, if possible, and avoid any unnecessary travel.

12:45 p.m. Update

The NWS has upgraded the Winter Storm Warning to an Ice Storm Warning for Boerne and Kendall County. This means forecasters have greater confidence that some areas could see upwards of a half inch of ice before the storm ends Sunday morning.

Roads, and especially bridges and overpasses, will likely become slick and hazardous, making travel nearly impossible. Weather-related power outages and tree damage are possible due to the ice.

10:45 a.m. Update

The bridge along the westbound I-10 access road has reopened. TxDOT crews treated the area with de-icing.

8:05 a.m. Update

Crews have closed down the westbound I-10 access road bridge behind Tractor Supply as driving conditions continue to deteriorate. Please stay home and off the roads this weekend.

Preparedness Resources

City Operations

The City of Boerne is making preparations ahead of the forecasted arrival of winter weather, including:

  • The Boerne Visitors Center and Patrick Heath Public Library will be closed on Saturday, Jan. 24.
  • Although the library will be closed, the Community Room will open as a warming center on Saturday, Jan. 24 and Sunday, Jan. 25 from 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. each day.
  • Streets Department has prepped salt trucks to quickly deploy to icy streets in Boerne. Crews are also pre-positioning barricades should they be needed to quickly close ice-covered bridges and roadways.
  • Boerne Utilities has checked and winterized water, gas, and electric lines where applicable. Crews are inspecting power lines with infrared technology to identify any areas that could be susceptible to icy weather, as well as trimming tree branches that could impact lines.
  • Parks and Recreation has secured bathroom facilities and shutting off water to prevent pipe breaks.
  • TxDOT will treat state highways, including I-10 and Highway 46, in Boerne and Kendall County.

Since the majority of the inclement weather is anticipated for the weekend, the City of Boerne does not expect any impacts to trash/recycling collections. If that changes, residents can monitor the status of services by visiting the WM website.
