As people prepare to ring in the New Year, Boerne’s police and fire chiefs are reminding everyone to celebrate responsibly by avoiding illegal fireworks and planning a sober ride home.
Fireworks are prohibited within Boerne city limits, and officials say safety should remain a priority even in areas where fireworks are allowed.
According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, fireworks caused an estimated 14,700 injuries nationwide last year, with more than half of those injuries involving people ages 15 to 44. There were an estimated 1,700 emergency room treated injuries in 2024 involving sparklers.
“With ongoing drought conditions and dry vegetation, fireworks pose a serious fire risk to homes, vehicles and open spaces,” Fire Chief Manny Casarez said. “Even one spark can lead to a dangerous situation. We want residents to start the new year safely.”
For those celebrating outside city limits where only approved fireworks are permitted, by order of the Kendall County Commissioners, officials recommend several safety precautions, including:
- Keeping children away from fireworks
- Maintaining a safe distance for spectators
- Never light fireworks while under the influence of alcohol
Residents are also urged to carefully follow manufacturer instructions, avoid aiming fireworks at people or structures, and keep a water source nearby in case of an emergency. Lastly, at the end of the night, place spent fireworks in a bucket of water to ensure there are no flare ups from a smoldering fuse/wick.
At the same time, police are emphasizing the importance of planning ahead if alcohol is part of New Year’s Eve celebrations.
“Driving impaired puts lives at risk, and it’s completely preventable,” Police Chief Steve Perez said. “A rideshare, taxi, or designated driver is always a better option than starting the new year with a DWI or causing a serious crash.”
Perez encourages festivity-goers to make a plan by designating a sober driver or arranging alternative transportation such as Uber, Lyft, or a cab. Hosts are also encouraged to ensure guests have a safe way home.
Officials remind residents to never drink and drive, always wear a seatbelt, stop impaired individuals from getting behind the wheel, and report suspected drunk drivers by calling 911.
“Celebrating responsibly is a shared responsibility,” Perez said. “Looking out for one another is how we keep our community safe.”
By taking these precautions you can help ensure everyone welcomes the new year safely and responsibly.
