Boerne kids (and their parents) rejoiced Tuesday morning as the City of Boerne celebrated the opening of the new restroom facility at Kinderpark.
“Today, we’re excited to celebrate a long-awaited and much-needed improvement to Kinderpark,” Mayor Frank Ritchie said. “This project came directly from you, our residents. Through community surveys and conversations with City staff, you told us what you needed, and we listened.”
Kinderpark has been a Boerne favorite for many years with its shaded play areas, climbing walls, picnic tables, and, of course, the big slide. But the lack of a restroom has meant that many playground visits have been cut short over the years.
Until Tuesday.
Neighbors, residents, City staff, and elected officials came together for a small celebration, complete with a ceremonial cutting of toilet paper in lieu of a ribbon.
“We are always exploring ways to make our parks and open spaces into even more welcoming and inclusive places for residents to enjoy,” Parks and Recreation Director Lissette Jimenez said. “This project has been a long time coming, and we are thrilled to see it complete.”
The facility, which was delivered as a complete unit last month, includes an ADA accessible restroom, water fountain, and bottle filler. It is connected to a new sidewalk extension, making it accessible to other areas of the park and the parking area just outside the park gate.
Kinderpark first opened in 1997 as Optimist Park thanks to the vision and support of the local Optimist Club. The park underwent a major renovation in 2016, which included the new name of Kinderpark as a nod to Boerne’s German roots.
