The Patrick Heath Public Library is preparing to hit the road with a brand-new bookmobile designed to bring library services directly to members of the community where they may not have easy access to the main Boerne Public Library facility.
The van, which was delivered in mid-October, features built-in bookshelves, a mobile cart, a TV monitor for projection, and a large retractable awning. The van is also equipped with modern technology to support interactive programming and educational outreach.
The expanded service comes at a time when the library is seeing record attendance at events and saving patrons millions every year.
During the last fiscal year, which ended on September 30, 2025, the library served more than 190,000 patrons and helped cardholders save an estimated $2.9 million by borrowing materials instead of buying them.
The vehicle’s colorful wrap highlights key Boerne landmarks, including a gazebo reminiscent of Main Plaza and a windmill paying tribute to The Friends’ Bookshop Under the Windmill.
“Our goal is to make the library accessible to everyone and meet them where they are,” Library Director Natalie Shults said. “The bookmobile will help us deliver excellence with every interaction and ensure that our neighbors across Boerne can experience the joy of reading and learning.”
Library staff will use the bookmobile to augment existing outreach programs, such as visits to The Center, and plan to expand services as routes are developed. To help determine the best stops, staff will survey community members at the upcoming Boerne Boo event.
City Manager Ben Thatcher said the initiative is a strong example of Boerne’s commitment to enhancing quality of life and strengthening community connections.
“This project aligns so well with our role at the City of Boerne,” Thatcher said. “It’s about service, innovation, and excellence by bringing resources directly to residents, building relationships, and ensuring that Boerne continues to be a community where opportunity and access are within reach for everyone.”
Library staff anticipate the bookmobile will begin a regular schedule of outreach in January 2026.
