After 16 years of service, Justin Boerner officially stepped down from Boerne’s Historic Landmark Commission during its regular meeting on Tuesday evening.
Boerner, who is just the third person to serve as chair of the commission, was honored for his longtime commitment to preserving Boerne’s rich architectural and cultural heritage.
“I really have thoroughly enjoyed it,” Boerner said during his final remarks. “Thank you to the staff – everybody has always helped out. I love this town.”
Boerner, who grew up in Boerne and raised his family here, also commented on how the City has evolved over the years and his appreciation to everyone involved in maintaining its unique character.

“I think it is wonderful that we have this opportunity to be on this commission to preserve the City of Boerne,” he said. “These beautiful buildings that we do have. Hopefully they do continue to be preserved for future people.”
Boerner’s tenure included key projects such as Boerne’s historic district survey in collaboration with the University of Texas at San Antonio. He was recognized by peers and City staff for his collaborative spirit and practical approach to historic preservation.

“You were very thorough and asked good commonsense questions to try to strike that balance between historic conservation and private property rights,” said Paul Barwick, Boerne’s special projects director.
The Historic Landmark Commission plays a vital role in the City of Boerne’s efforts to preserve its historic character. The commission is tasked with reviewing applications for landmark designations, permits for alterations or demolitions of historic properties, and applications for historic preservation tax exemptions. Members also investigate and make recommendations on matters related to restoration, enhancement, and the long-term protection of local historic districts.
The commission meets at 5:30 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month, with additional special meetings scheduled as needed. Meetings are held in the City Council Chambers at City Hall, 447 N. Main Street.
A successor to Boerner as commission chair has not yet been announced.
