Hill Country regional crisis negotiations training highlights strength in unity

Posted on:

Law enforcement members from the Hill Country Regional SWAT Team gathered in Boerne recently to train together and run through simulated crisis scenarios.

The team comprises officers from the Boerne, Kerrville, and Fredericksburg police departments and includes two units – Negotiations and Tactical.

The recent training, focused on negotiations, is part of a regular regimen to keep officers ready to respond to service calls involving suicidal and/or barricaded individuals and hostage situations.

“This regional effort underscores the importance of preparation through partnership,” Boerne Police Chief Steve Perez said. “By bringing together multiple departments, school counselors, and local organizations, the training bridges experience and expertise in a way that benefits everyone.”

Training exercises are designed to mirror the challenges of real crisis and hostage situations while testing communication, strategy, and teamwork. With scenarios unfolding in real time and unscripted, negotiators were pushed to adapt quickly and work seamlessly across departments.

Actors from the Boerne Community Theatre added a sense of realism by portraying suspects in the training scenarios. Their ability to simulate real-world situations elevated the training and forced negotiators to navigate uncertainty as they would in a true emergency. Boerne ISD crisis counselors were also in attendance as a part of their emergency training.

The collaborative, specialized team approach promotes efficiency by pooling resources to maximize impact while reducing cost to taxpayers. During its first full year of operation in 2024, the team successfully completed two operations.

The day of training was a clear reflection of the shared commitment among Hill Country communities to prepare for the unexpected and to protect the people and places we value most.
