City holds groundbreaking ceremony for Adler Road improvements

The City of Boerne, along with elected officials from Kendall County, held a groundbreaking ceremony Thursday morning along Adler Road to mark the start of major improvements to the roadway.

The first improvement will be the replacement of two culverts – one at Currey Creek and one at No Name Creek.

“During heavy rain and flooding events, these two sections of Adler Road are routinely underwater,” Boerne Engineering and Mobility Director Jeff Carroll said. “The new culverts will be much larger drainage structures that will raise these two crossings out of the 100-year floodplain.”

The contractor for the culvert project is currently ordering several materials that are custom made off site. In the meantime, crews will begin relocating existing utilities to accommodate the new culverts. The culvert at Currey Creek will be replaced first followed by No Name Creek.

The $5 million project was listed in the City’s 2020 Drainage Master Plan and will be paid for through funding from the federal government as part of the American Rescue Plan Act.

The City has partnered with Kendall County for the project, which is contributing $1.5 million of federal funds toward the total project cost.

Adler Road Reconstruction – Bond Project

The design for the reconstruction of Adler Road from Esser Road to Main Street is still underway. This $18 million project was approved by residents in the City’s 2022 bond election.

The project includes the complete reconstruction and widening of the roadway to include a continuous center turn lane, drainage improvements, multi-use sidewalks, and a shared use path.

Adler Road was identified for improvements based on its overall Pavement Condition Index (PCI) of 22 out of 100, citizen survey feedback, and the need to provide drainage improvements along the critical route.

The City is using the same engineer for both the culvert project and the bond project to ensure both designs have no conflicts.

Once construction begins, the timeline for completion of the culvert project is nine to ten weeks. The reconstruction and widening bond project will be completed after the culvert project.
