The Boerne Independent School District’s Safety and Security Team has been named the 2026 Agency of the Year by the Texas Association of School Resource Officers, recognizing decades of collaboration between the district and the Boerne Police Department to keep students safe across the community.
The Boerne Police Department is proud to staff nine officers across the district’s 14 campuses.
The BPD school resource officers are experienced patrol officers who receive hundreds of additional hours of specialized training in school safety, juvenile law, and the criminal enforcement portions of the Texas Education Code.
Officers also provide mentoring and educational programs for students, including self-defense training, internet safety instruction, and drug and alcohol prevention classes. Many are active in the district’s mentoring programs and youth outreach efforts throughout the community.
Boerne Police Chief Steve Perez said the district’s SROs go far beyond traditional law enforcement duties on campus and provide a level of excellence tied to the department’s high standards.
“Our officers are mentors, educators, and role models for these students every day,” Perez said. “Whether they are helping lead mentoring programs, participating in campus events, supporting after-school activities, or coordinating youth outreach projects. It is evident every day just how deeply invested they are in the success and well-being of our kids and schools.”
The Boerne Police Department launched the SRO program in 1991 and has partnered with BISD ever since to assign school resource officers to campuses throughout the district.
“This recognition reflects the strong collaboration between the Boerne Police Department and Boerne ISD and our shared commitment we have to protecting and supporting our students,” Mayor Frank Ritchie said. “These officers create an environment where children feel safe, supported, and ready to learn. This award is a testament to the dedication of everyone involved in keeping our schools and community strong.”
