It was a reunion Friday evening at the Boerne Police Department that no one could have foreseen but one that everyone was glad to attend as family, friends, and first responders filled the BPD training room.
Four Boerne police officers were recognized for their lifesaving efforts during a ceremony on September 6, 2024, after saving a young child from nearly drowning earlier this summer.
It happened June 30, just after 5 p.m., when a 3-year-old boy was found unresponsive in the Trails of Herff Ranch community pool. Lindsay Hiser, a registered nurse who was present at the scene, immediately began utilizing her training and administered CPR.
Officers Jose Salazar, Stephen Moring, Cody Shelton, and Zach Reed arrived shortly after and took over resuscitation efforts.
Boerne firefighters and Kendall County EMS also responded to the scene, assisting in stabilizing the boy, who was then transported to a San Antonio hospital. The child was later released after receiving treatment.
During the ceremony, Boerne Police Chief Steve Perez commended the officers for their teamwork and swift actions, which were credited with saving the child’s life.
“Your quick thinking, teamwork, and lifesaving measures in this critical situation were instrumental in saving this child’s life,” Chief Perez said. “Your actions exemplify the high standards of police work and dedication to the community.”
In recognition of their actions, the four officers received the Lifesaving Award. Officer Rebecca Foley also presented the officers with the American Heart Association Heart Saver Award, acknowledging the officers’ training and effective use of CPR to save the child.
After a brief ceremony, the first responders got a chance to give high fives and hugs to the little boy, and his mother, overwhelmed with joy, kept saying “thank you” to everyone in attendance.
“This event reminded us why we do what we do. Our work as first responders is not just about enforcing the law, it’s about protecting lives, often in the most critical moments,” Chief Perez said. “I couldn’t be prouder of the officers, firefighters, EMS personnel, and community members who came together that day. It’s moments like these that show the strength of our community and the impact we can have when we work together.”
