The Boerne Police Department is investigating a fatal crash that occurred Wednesday evening along the westbound lanes of Interstate 10 near mile marker 540.

At approximately 8:40 p.m. on Oct. 15, officers were dispatched to the scene of a two-vehicle collision involving an 18-wheeler and a Toyota Tundra. When officers arrived, they determined the driver of the Tundra had crashed into the rear of the 18-wheeler.

The driver of the Tundra was identified as Bradly Dietert, 40, who succumbed to his injuries at the scene. A portion of the interstate was closed for several hours as investigators worked to determine the cause of the crash.

The preliminary investigation revealed the 18-wheeler had experienced an electrical or mechanical failure and became disabled in the inside lane of IH-10. According to witness statements, the tanker truck did not have any rear lights to include hazard lights on until seconds before the collision. Texas DPS arrived and assisted with the crash investigation.

Next of kin has been notified.
