Planning Staff hold award alongside council

The City of Boerne’s Planning and Parks and Recreation departments received two prestigious recognitions from the American Planning Association Texas Chapter.

These honors recognize the City’s thoughtful approach to high professional standards and consistent commitment to community engagement.

Recognition of Planning Excellence

For the second year in a row, the Planning Department has earned the Richard R. Lillie FAICP Planning Excellence Recognition, which is a distinction given to only 49 cities across Texas.

The recognition evaluates cities based on several criteria, including the level of training for Planning and Zoning Commission members, the comprehensiveness of the City’s Master Plan, and the integration of public participation in planning decisions.

“This award reflects our Planning Department’s high standards, dedication to professional growth, and strong support from City Council and the Planning and Zoning Commission,” Assistant City Manager Kristy Stark said.

The honor reflects Boerne’s commitment to thoughtful preparation, professional development, and collaboration between City Council, staff, and the community. It also considers how effectively the City incorporates planning best practices into local policies and projects that guide future growth.

Urban Design Silver Award for Corridor Enhancement

The City’s Parks and Recreation Department received the Planning Achievement Award for Urban Design, Silver Category, for its Urban Corridor Design and Enhancement Guide.

The plan was led by Paul Barwick, the City’s special projects director. It provides design guidance for future development along key corridors, ensuring new projects complement Boerne’s established character while enhancing walkability and visual appeal.

Developed with community input, the guide outlines consistent design standards for landscaping, lighting, building form, and streetscape improvements to create inviting and functional spaces that enhance daily life for residents and visitors alike.

The American Planning Association Texas Chapter recognized the project for its innovative and collaborative approach, balancing Boerne’s historic identity with modern design principles. The award highlights the City’s ongoing commitment to thoughtful urban planning and a cohesive community environment.

The guide helps City staff, developers, and designers work together to make sure new projects fit Boerne’s unique character. This collaborative approach keeps the community’s vision front and center as the city continues to develop.

The Urban Corridor Design and Enhancement Guide shows how Boerne can grow while keeping its small-town charm. It includes clear guidelines for building styles, materials, and landscaping that reflect the city’s historic look while meeting modern needs.
