Before they learn all about reading, writing, and arithmetic, incoming kindergarteners learned some important safety tips during the Boerne Police Department’s annual Safety Town Program.
Officer Ryan Cook, a school resource officer, led and hosted the week-long program at Cibolo Creek Elementary, introducing children to key safety practices with the help of several City departments.
“These kids are like sponges because they soak everything in and are so excited to learn and be at school,” Cook said. “This program allows them to come into the first day of school ready and prepared.”
The event brought together 33 incoming kindergarteners who participated in various safety activities designed to educate them on important topics. The children had the opportunity to learn from employees from the Police Department, Fire Department, Animal Care Services, and Emergency Medical Services.
The Safety Town curriculum covered the following areas:
- Traffic Safety: Children learned how to navigate stop signs, traffic lights, pedestrian rules, and crosswalks.
- Stranger Safety: Lessons were provided on what to do in situations involving strangers.
- Swim Safety: Basic water safety tips were taught to help children stay safe in and around pools.
- Stray Animals: Animal control officers educated the children on how to behave around stray animals.
- Fire Safety: Firefighters gave a presentation on fire safety and allowed the children to explore a fire engine.
- School Bus Safety: The program also included instruction on school bus safety and how to follow a bus driver’s instructions.
Cook expressed gratitude to all participating departments for their role in making the program a valuable learning opportunity for the children.
Boerne ISD starts its new academic year on Monday, August 12.
