Boerne City Attorney Mick McKamie has been named a 2025 Amicus Award recipient by the International Municipal Lawyers Association (IMLA), placing him among 55 attorneys nationwide honored for their pro bono contributions to IMLA’s Legal Advocacy program.
The award recognizes McKamie’s work supporting local government interests through amicus briefs submitted to appellate courts across the country, including the U.S. Supreme Court. His efforts help strengthen the legal standing of cities like Boerne in cases that shape public policy nationwide.
“I’m deeply honored to be recognized by IMLA,” McKamie said. “This work is about ensuring local governments have a strong voice in the nation’s most consequential legal arenas.”
The IMLA Amicus Program files roughly 40 briefs each year, either independently or in partnership with organizations such as the National League of Cities and the National Association of Counties, promoting the legal positions of municipalities on issues ranging from land use to constitutional protections.
Oftentimes, these filings influence judicial decisions in cases with wide-reaching impacts.
“Mick’s commitment to municipal law and his tireless advocacy for cities like Boerne exemplify the highest standards of public service,” City Manager Ben Thatcher said. “We’re incredibly fortunate to have someone of his caliber guiding our legal strategy.”
With more than 60 appellate decisions as lead counsel, McKamie brings decades of municipal legal experience to the table. He has previously served as city attorney for several Texas cities, including Amarillo, Greenville, and Hondo, and has advised both Home Rule and General Law cities across the state.
He is a frequent speaker on topics such as open government, land use litigation, employment law, and governmental immunity. His most recent award is far from his first; his past honors include IMLA’s Marvin J. Glink Award in 2011 and the Charles S. Rhyne Lifetime Achievement Award in 2019, two of the highest recognitions in municipal law.
