School resource officers with the Boerne Police Department will be there on Aug. 11 to greet thousands of students on their first day back in the classroom.
The department, in partnership with Boerne ISD, places an officer at the district’s nine campuses in the Boerne city limits. Deputies with the Kendall County Sheriff’s Office and officers with the Fair Oaks Ranch Police Department are assigned to the five district schools in their respective jurisdictions.
Together, these agencies ensure each of the district’s campuses are served by a dedicated school resource officer.
“From ensuring the safety of students to showing up in mentorship roles, our school resource officers are committed to the students they serve,” Boerne Police Chief Steve Perez said. “I’m proud of their work and I can’t wait to see the impact they have on students this school year.”
While teachers are polishing off lessons plans and families are finishing back-to-school shopping, these SROs have been training and preparing for a return to school, too.
To become an SRO, officers must complete hours of additional training and course work, preparing them to respond to emergencies and in moments of crisis.
Officers also provide mentoring and educational programs for students, including self-defense training, internet safety instruction, and drug and alcohol prevention classes. Many are active in the district’s mentoring programs and youth outreach efforts throughout the community.
